DANA SMITH

Dana is the Program Director and founder of Big Sister Yoga Project. She is a committed mentor and yogi who guides teens to discover and trust their inner spark, develop self awareness and make healthy life choices.

Big Sister Yoga Project offers more than yoga. Youth will explore their own creative expression, develop self confidence, learn to make healthy food choices and build strong relationships.

Big Sister helps girl avoid pitfalls on way to adulthood

When Dana Smith first started showing up as a Big Sister at Marvina Davis’ elementary school, the two would work on homework, play cards, paint, visit the playground and sometimes share a carryout meal from McDonald’s.

The conversations between the adult and the 8-year-old were pretty basic then, especially since Marvina — who lived with her father, three sisters and a brother — found it difficult to talk to women.

It took years, Marvina recalled, before she trusted her mentor enough that “I broke out of my shell” and began sharing more intimate thoughts and experiences.

Big Sister Yoga Project is a youth mentoring program that guides teens to discover and trust their inner spark. The program uses yoga as a method to help youth connect with themselves and to positive adult role models.
